WHAT WE DO Through a variety of programs and services, and in partnership with various nonprofits and community-based organizations, the Karina Association currently serves abandoned children including those with disabilities in Bulgaria. We have started this program already in Ruse, Bulgaria in 2009. We have a Safe Home and Day Center renovated and active. Specialists provide therapy one on one to severely disabled children removed from state institutions. Karina Day Center provides parents with care, support and specialized services for children with disabilities. In a loving environment we are aiming to provide families affected by disabilities with support by providing to their children and young adults with care which responds to their individual needs. Please join us in building brighter futures, thank you! |
Who We Are
Karina Association is a national and international charity organization working to help improve the lives of world's abandoned and disabled children. We have been helping the children in Bulgaria reversing decades-long practices of neglect. Our goal is to provide community-based support in small group homes and Day centers. Abandoned young people and children live in extreme poverty and this is fuelling the growing problem of abandonment and sex trafficking from Eastern Europe. Our goal is to protect these children and young adults to become victims of neglect and abuse.
The Karina Association was founded in March 2009 by Biliana Borimetchkova, who was deeply affected by the British documentary filmmaker Kate Blewett’s "Bulgaria’s Abandoned Children". Hoping to raise public awareness about the critical situation faced by institutionalized youth in Bulgaria, Ms. Borimetchkova’s passion and commitment quickly grew to providing programs and services for abandoned and disabled children throughout the world. Today, we are guided by our mission: To improve the quality of life and provide equal opportunities to children and young adults who are abandoned or with disabilities through professional services, advocacy, and by raising public awareness.
